Phoneboy and Heart Attack Man bring the noise to the legendary 40 Watt Club

Last weekend, Phoneboy and Heart Attack Man made a tour stop at the legendary 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, joined by support acts Slowjoy and PONY.

The night kicked off with PONY, a clever grunge-pop act from Canada. For fans of Charly Bliss or The Cranberries, their set balanced sweet melodies with a gritty edge. Front person Sam Bielanski brought sincere energy to the stage, at one point asking the crowd for “big smiles” and “lots of dancing” before dryly sharing, “this next song is about my cat that died.”

Next up was Slowjoy, delivering a satisfying mix of grunge, shoegaze, and alt rock. Singer Esteban Flores led with stage banter and presence, connecting with the crowd throughout the engaging 30-minute set, where they also shared a sneak peek at new tracks.

Heart Attack Man were up next, blending their signature pop-punk sound with occasional hardcore breakdowns and catchy hooks. Their set had the crowd dancing freely with perhaps the loudest sing-along of the night. Like Slowjoy, they also shared new material during their set.

As a fan awaited their set outside, it was remarked that Phoneboy is “the least selfish band.” When Phoneboy took the stage, that description clicked. It referred to how the members switch off between verses and choruses, smoothly sharing the spotlight in a way few acts are able to do. Their “unselfish” art creates a sound that is loud and full — mixing new wave with indie rock — and the fans lapped up every second.
