I believe that people can contain good and bad. They can be both nice and mean, and they can be more of one than the other. But in the end, everyone holds onto the light and the dark.
Take Zolita, for instance. The Los Angeles-based artist has become one of the most distinct independent voices in the pop scene, building her career on songs that contain both softness and control. She sees music as a fully immersive experience, complete with hints of fantasy and vulnerability. To best construct these worlds, Zolita approaches her songs from a visionary angle, combining cinematic production and visual storytelling.
The result is projects like her upcoming album, HELL’S BELLES, out August 28. The album, as described in a press release, promises to contain two distinct worlds. There’s the soft and romantic side, also known as the “Belles” side. There’s also the dark and hedonistic side, also known as the “Hell” side. Zolita shares that HELL’S BELLES reflects
“my split influences and dual nature as both an artist and a person. I am Hell and I am a Belle.”
The “Hell” side of the album is marked by “HARDCORE.” This song pulls us out of the “Belle” world and introduces us to Zolita’s riotous alter ego. Here, Zolita sings, “Don’t grab my hand and don’t hold the door / ‘Cause romance / Is not what I’m looking for.” She’s ready to “start a worldwide scandal,” tossing aside the innocent reputation she has displayed up until this point on the album. The gritty electro-pop landscape best suits this edgy transition, as the buzzy bass and rhythmic melodies heard throughout the track contain a power that can’t be ignored.
