Alex Sampson embraces the changes on new EP ‘Growing Pains’ — EP Review

Date:

Throughout his newest EP, Growing Pains, Alex Sampson delivers some of his most sophisticated work yet. On the eight tracks, Sampson highlights the difficult yet confusing transition into adulthood through a series of feelings that span optimism, youth and the realities that come with growing up.

Sampson has become well known for his talent of merging vulnerable narratives with catchy, radio-friendly music, and his new EP is no different. Instead of relying on bold pronouncements or extravagant production techniques, the EP succeeds through honesty conveyed in the songs.

The title track, “Growing Pains,” is probably the most emotionally resonant track on the project. Featuring acoustic guitar and minimalist production, it explores the feelings associated with transitioning into adulthood and discovering that life may not always progress steadily. Sampson’s lyrics speak about moving out, feeling homesick and considering yourself a grown-up despite all the responsibilities that come with it.

On the other hand, songs like “There She Goes” and “Not Even Gone” prove that Sampson can create catchy music without losing the emotional side of things. Every song on the project plays its part in telling the overall story. This makes the entire project feel carefully put together.

Ultimately, what makes this EP unique is that it acknowledges that certainty cannot be achieved; rather than solving problems, it addresses questions. Sampson does not claim to hold all of the answers, but he opens up a dialogue about the questions that need to be addressed. As a result, he achieves something more relatable and captivating than ever before.
