Berlin-based collective Moses Yoofee Trio’s new 6-track EP Chasing Light is a fantastic followup to last year’s debut self-titled record, MYT. The EP features live instrumentation, giving off jazz lounge vibes, also incorporating breakbeat synths for tonal changes that appeal to those looking for good times at the function.

Helping us zero in on the EP is the fitting beginning track “Zero.” With spacey synthesizers, luscious piano riffs, and smooth percussive beats, the song is reminiscent of the Japanese jazz music found in anime from the ‘90s, such as Cowboy Bebop or Lupin The III. It also feels like the perfect track for an existential modern spy flick during a scene where the protagonist hangs out at the bar contemplating a mission.

“Nothing To Lose,” featuring Berlin-based alternative/R&B artist Mulay, adds depth to the motivational undertones through synthesizers and repetitive, percussive beats that keep you alert when you’re feeling down and in need of a pick-me-up.

“Chasing Light,” though, is easily the standout track of the EP. The titular track boasts a lively energy, with percussion and synthesizers accompanied by laid-back bass guitar riffs that put listeners at ease.

Shifting genres a bit, we move from a lively jazz performance to the track “Inner Circle.” This cinematic R&B track pulsates through its instrumentals with notes that grab your attention.

“Honest,” featuring Ahmad Mateen, is the final track on the EP. It exudes a soul vibe, accompanied by soft yet sensual bass guitar riffs. The cherry on top of this song is the chorus, which bridges both jazz and soul in a beautiful yet intricate balance of natural high feelings. It’s the perfect track to touch grass to.

Moses Yoofee Trio’s Chasing Light breathes soul and energy into listeners through a lively instrumental arrangement and breakbeat vocals that harken to a live jazz bar. Listeners’ ears will perk up as it comes highly recommended to those who crave the type of exquisite nightlife that’s found within intimate jazz bars.
