It seems like we’re all distracted from our lives by our phones, doomscrolling as a temporary relief from boredom or escaping into the technical advancements advertised versus reality. That’s the antithesis of Los Angeles-based bassist and singer Thundercat’s fifth record Distracted, out now.

Beginning our journey into the cosmos is “Candlelight.” Imagine the Adult Swim interludes that play before your favourite show appears. This track, in its laid-back form with soft vocals and funky basslines and drums, is reminiscent of those interludes and makes you feel like you’re in Super Mario World.

The following song, “No More Lies,” is a dream collaboration between Thundercat and Tame Impala. The two artists are musically in sync, creating a psychedelic dream that will live rent-free in your head long after the last note ends.

The standout track on the album, “She Knows Too Much,” features Thundercat’s longtime collaborator and friend, the late Mac Miller. The track leans more into the jazz and soul genres, highlighting Mac Miller’s hypnotic vocals. It explores falling in love with an attractive, affluent girl filled with excess.

“I Did This To Myself” features rapper Lil Yachty and producer Flying Lotus. The song begins with a trip-house production that oozes swag and charm, featuring rhythmic drums and bass to create a hypnotic vibe. It’s the perfect track to play for photo shoots or even a runway event.

“You Left Without Saying Goodbye” ends the record on an emotional note. Opening up with a somber tone, the song confronts the loss or the drifting away of a friend. Not often spoken about, the loss of a meaningful friendship over time is heavy and heartbreaking. This song hits you right in the gut, featuring spacey vocals and piano interludes that evoke even more emotion.

Thundercat’s Distracted sees the artist soar to new heights of creativity and versatility while also grounding himself by featuring some of his frequent collaborators that we all know and love. We highly recommend giving this masterful addition to his discography a listen.
