Madison Beer has officially extended her most recent album with the release of locket deluxe. This version of her third studio album includes four new tracks, “lovergirl,” “free,” “somehow i got lucky” and “locket theme – extended.”
The deluxe does not just feel like a sequel to a project that has been concluded, but rather the long-awaited conclusion to the emotions and messages laid out subliminally throughout the first record. If locket was about the pain of heartbreak, then its deluxe is about love, happiness and peace of mind.
The secret to the success of locket deluxe lies in its cohesion, even with the changes it introduces. The extended project maintains the atmospheric feel of the original album while also incorporating new elements that provide an emotional balance across the entire album. Even though there is still sadness in the album, additional songs such as “lovergirl” and “somehow i got lucky” introduce some warmth to the entire record. The deluxe edition ultimately shifts the focus of the original album from being solely about heartbreak to being about freedom.
“lovergirl” has a gentle vibe but is still very emotionally open. While the song could have easily come across as just another love song, it instead feels like Beer coming to terms with the fact that she is someone who loves deeply, even after experiencing pain. The lyrics, “Love so hard, it makes me cry” and “I’ve been burned far more times than one / And yet it hasn’t stopped me,” convey a sense of self-awareness that allows the song to carry more weight than your average song about romance. Beer also released a music video for this song, which featured her boyfriend Justin Herbert, a quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers.
And then, “somehow i got lucky” — another short track that makes listeners feel as though Beer is reading her own diary entry aloud to them. It is a little understated compared to “free,” because “somehow i got lucky” is much more intimate, bringing a sense of gratitude and emotional ease to the album.
Lastly, “locket theme – extended,” although seemingly nothing but a reiteration of the intro to the album, proves to be much more meaningful when we realize the full depth of the added harmonies. While serving the purpose of an extended intro initially, this track transforms into an emotional conclusion for the entire era.
In all, locket deluxe is successful because not only does it expand the album’s runtime, but also because it deepens the world that Beer created on the original album. The new songs no longer focus on heartbreak and instead talk about how she feels post-breakup. They are about freedom, tenderness, thankfulness and emotional release.
