Take a deep breath and transcend into an alternate reality delicately crafted by Yndling—the project of Norwegian dream pop artist Silje Esepevik—on her newest single “It’s Almost Like You’re Here.” Yndling’s sound may be familiar to fans of Mazzy Star, Beach House, Men I Trust and Cocteau Twins as she turns to the intricate dream pop/shoegaze world—prioritizing the blend of ethereal vocals and instrumentation to create a boundless, extraordinary listening experience—for inspiration.
After debuting her album, Mood Booster, in August 2024 and making her international live debut last year at New Colossus in New York, Yndling’s momentum has carried her into the new year, with fresh music ready for her growing international fanbase. “It’s Almost Like You’re Here” solidifies her spot as a trustworthy artist. She delivers a multi-textured track with breathy, fragile vocals, a resonant guitar riff and a stable yet carrying drum beat that whispers, “everything’s going to be okay.”
Although the single centers around the frustration and confusion with someone who isn’t on the same level in a relationship and refuses to grow, it is presented in an unexpected way. Yndling is able to turn the heaviness of these feelings into a sound showered with calmness, using the pure softness of her voice to glide through the narrative. If two words could describe Yndling’s craft, they would be grace and awareness.
On “Its Almost Like You’re Here” Silje Esepevik shared:
“’It’s Almost Like You’re Here’ is a song about being on the edge of a relationship with someone where you feel like things could be really great, but the one you’re dating is too scared to take the leap and give it a shot. So, it’s a song written out of frustration in some sense. It’s kind of like, ‘Why are you making this so complicated?’ I guess it’s an almost universal experience for everyone who has ever found themself in a situationship. From the outside, there is no reason for all the uncertainty, but for some reason—maybe fear of getting too close or losing them after a bit—it’s so difficult to take the leap and lean into love.”
