Stepping onto The Grove stage at Governors Ball was a moment years in the making for the Mexican disco-electronic band Midnight Generation. The group has become known for their vibrant performances, drawing inspiration from artists like Daft Punk and Prince, while crafting a style entirely their own. Sitting backstage at Gov Ball to chat with Melodic Magazine, Midnight Generation reflected on the experience.

“We’re really happy,” they shared. “We’ve always thought about this – playing huge festivals for lots of people. It’s finally happening, so we’re really proud!”

When asked how they create their signature dance party atmosphere, the band explained that the energy is intentional. “Well, it’s premeditated because that’s the whole point of this,” they said. “I think just getting everyone dancing and enjoying the moment… that’s the point of our music.”

Their connection with listeners has significantly grown recently as the band continues to expand internationally. During their 2025 Tender Love World Tour, Midnight Generation found themselves reaching new cities and bigger audiences, largely thanks to social media. “It felt really good to see so many people in different cities that we would never imagine visiting, just because we started promoting our music on social media,” they explained. “I think that’s the lesson: find different ways to promote your music, because you never know what will happen. There are a lot of people who will want your music in different parts of the world.”

That global reach has also allowed Midnight Generation to further evolve creatively. They have been embracing new influences, incorporating rock and electronic elements into their latest music. Tracks like “Don’t Wait Up” and “Teacher,” their collaboration with German indie-pop duo Zimmer90, have quickly become fan favorites. When asked which songs have the biggest reactions live, the band said it’s a mix of both new material and longtime favorites. “I think it’s definitely the newer songs that have gained attention, but sometimes the classics are still the songs that I see people enjoying,” they said. “We really like to see that at our shows.”

Now, the next chapter is starting to unfold with their new track, “Runaways” – a futuristic disco-single the band describes as a fun, dance-focused anthem inspired by life on the road. Along with a new music video, the release introduces another piece of the story they are building in their musical universe.

“‘Runaways’ is going to be released on June 25. It’s a really fun song where we often say, ‘Get up, it’s time to dance!’ It also talks about starting out on a tour, like packing up our things and going out into the world to play our music,” they explain. When asked if “Runwaways” is part of a larger release, they teased, “We’re currently working on filming videos for [other] songs. They’re all related, but it’s all still a surprise.”

Of course, life on the road isn’t just about music; downtime is also important, so when asked what essentials they like to have on the bus, the band shared a few necessities. “Wine!” they joked. “Yeah, we really love wine, all of us. We don’t want to say everything is alcohol-related, but…” they laughed before quickly adding another item to the list: “We also need habanero in our lives. Sometimes when we’re traveling, we need some spicy snacks too.”

The road ahead includes even more major performances alongside artists such as Empire of the Sun and Purple Disco Machine – two acts that have helped shape modern dance and electronic music. For Midnight Generation, it represents a full-circle moment. “We’ve been listening to those artists since we were young,” they said. “So, we’re very excited to be sharing a stage with them. It’s really thrilling for us!”

The band also reflected on how different this chapter of their career feels compared to their early days in music. “When we first started playing shows, sometimes we supported other groups that were not quite aligned with our style. Now we are playing side by side with artists that are similar to us, and that creates a really great atmosphere during the performance,” they explained.

When asked about the best advice a fellow artist has shared, the band jokingly replied, “Nobody has given us any advice… just kidding!” Their real answer came back to the importance of trusting your instincts and creating your own path. “I like [the phrase], Just Do It. from Nike,” they said, explaining that you can’t wait for opportunities to appear – you have to take a chance and put in the work. They also shared a quote they admire from actor Willem Dafoe, who once said he doesn’t give advice because everyone needs to find their own way.

As Midnight Generation enters their next chapter, the band is eager to see where the road takes them next. When asked what they are looking forward to most on the upcoming tour, their answer highlighted the experiences that continue to inspire them. “Going to new cities, just enjoying life as everyone does, and meeting a lot of people,” they shared. “We are always looking towards the future but also remembering to reflect back on what we’ve accomplished.”

When it comes to what fans can expect next, the band kept things simple: “Come to a show and find out! We’ll have new music soon, so come to the show!” With a possible album on the horizon and more tour dates ahead, Midnight Generation shows no signs of slowing down.
