There are concerts, and then there are evenings that feel like they exist somewhere between reality and a dream. On June 19th, Lord Huron transformed Virginia Credit Union LIVE! in Richmond into exactly that kind of place, delivering a performance that felt less like a concert and more like stepping into a series of the band’s beautifully crafted stories. Joined by singer-songwriter Thao, the evening was filled with nostalgia, mystery, and the kind of emotional connection that only Lord Huron seems capable of creating.
As the sun began to disappear behind the venue, anticipation filled the air. Fans packed the amphitheater, many wearing fake mustaches in support of Ben’s new facial hair choice. Before Lord Huron took the stage though, Thao, a Virginia native warmed up the crowd with a heartfelt set that blended folk, indie rock, and personal storytelling. Her charisma and quirkiness made her the perfect opener, setting a reflective tone for what was to come.
The atmosphere shifted the moment the opening notes rang out from the stage. Instantly, Richmond was transported into the mysterious universe Lord Huron has spent years building. With Kristen Stewarts voice ringing throughout the amphitheater, as Ben Schneider moseyed over to the eerily lit phonebooth on the stage, where he belted out the chorus to “Who Laughs Lasts” to kick the set off. The stage was filled with cinematic imagery, vintage props (the Cosmic Selector and phone booth are just as big of characters as the band), and haunting visuals that made every song feel like a chapter in a larger narrative. Rather than simply performing songs, the band created an immersive experience that invited fans to lose themselves in the stories unfolding before them.
Ben Schneider’s voice sounded as captivating as ever, effortlessly floating over the crowd as the band moved through fan favorites and newer material alike. Songs like “Ends of the Earth,” “Wait by the River,” and “The Secret of Life” were met with enthusiastic singalongs, with thousands of voices joining together under the Virginia night sky. The audience wasn’t merely watching a performance, they were part of it. Members of the audience clapped along during “Secret of Life” and danced with their partners during the live performance of “I Lied” with Misty Boyce filling in for August Ponthier.
One of the night’s most memorable moments came during “Frozen Pines,” with the Lord Huron’s live version being completely different that anything on the album. As the song drifted across the venue, the crowd fell into a near-reverent silence, soaking in every note before erupting into cheers at its conclusion. The song’s themes of longing and grief felt especially powerful in the open-air setting, creating a moment that seemed to suspend time.
Visually, Lord Huron remains one of the most compelling live acts touring today. Their carefully crafted projections, atmospheric lighting, and theatrical presentation elevated every song without ever distracting from the music itself, in fact it highlights the music as their catalog drifts from otherworldly and sonic to a more country western sound. The show flowed seamlessly from one chapter to the next, creating a cinematic journey through the band’s catalog. Each transition felt intentional, adding depth to an already rich performance.
As the night moved toward its conclusion, the energy somehow continued to build. “Meet Me in the Woods” and “The Night We Met” drew some of the loudest reactions of the evening, with fans singing every word back to the band, with the encore kicking off with “The World Ender,” which is the name many fans of Lord Huron go by. By the time the show arrived, it was clear that nobody was ready for the night to end. Lord Huron closed the evening with the same sense of wonder that had defined the entire performance, leaving the audience with memories that will linger long after the final notes faded away.
Some artists play concerts. Lord Huron creates worlds. On this warm summer evening in Richmond, they invited thousands of fans into theirs, and for a couple of unforgettable hours, nobody wanted to leave.
