Indie pop duo New Constellations released their debut album, It Comes in Waves, on May 15. The Portland-based duo consists of childhood best friends Harlee Case on vocals and Josh Smith as a multi-instrumentalist and producer.
Over 13 songs, a dreamy soundscape captures the friends’ relationship spanning over different phases of their lives. The duo released a music video for the fourth track, “Say That You Will,” on the same night as the album release.
Nostalgic keys hold down the swaying chorus, while Case vocalizes a yearning for reciprocal feelings of passion. The music video sees the musicians on a night out. A vintage feel overlays the scenes, with an old phone booth and bright red diner seats. As Case sings along to the track, they drive through town before they dance carefree in a laundromat and hotel.
On their album, Case shared,
“It Comes In Waves explores the cycles of being human. Joy, grief, and love are all temporary experiences that we hold and then release. This album is about embracing the ebb and flow of life, holding space to honor and cherish times of your life while also letting them pass.”
The lyrics for “Say That You Will” reflect the album’s themes of allowing oneself to feel what you need to. Case softly sings, “Whispers of the past won’t save me / I don’t wanna sound too crazy, but I will / Say that you’re mine / Call it a thrill / Need you tonight.”
