Gracie Abrams announces third studio album, ‘Daughter from Hell’

Date:

Gracie Abrams announced her return to the studio through Daughter from Hell, releasing July 17. Abrams’ third studio album marks her second project produced by Aaron Dessner, who works with artists such as Taylor Swift, Noah Kahan, and Bon Iver.

Hinting at an album announcement since March, Abrams shared a photo in front of Swift’s Long Pond Studio and dropped imagery with the number three, lots of yellow, fire, and a witch sticker. The teasers seem to hint at a darker tone, perhaps with themes of guilt or rebellion.

She leaked a snippet of her upcoming single “Hit the Wall,” which releases today, May 14, and includes her usual personal lyrics floating over interpolating keys. Sounding similar to her introspective first album, Good Riddance, the lines she unveiled go, “And I want you so badly, but I close off / I thought we’d get married, but I guess not / now you can watch while I hit the wall.”

It’s been two years since the release of Abrams’ second album, The Secret of Us, though she toured for quite a while following the release. Though the Daughter from Hell tracklist remains hidden, Abrams performed unreleased tracks on tour, such as “Death Wish,” which could potentially be featured on the newest album. Fans also still hope for the studio version of “In Between,” an unreleased track by Abrams shared on SoundCloud in 2016.

Sharing details about the upcoming project, producer Dessner explained that they began writing for the album two years ago on the same day they recorded “That’s So True” and “I Told You Things,” which stand as some of Abrams’ more popular songs. He also shared,

“You’ll hear us expanding our musical vocabulary and pushing into uncharted waters sonically, and most of all the sharpening and deepening of Gracie’s lyricism and expression in ways that continue to astound me. I believe this album contains absolutely the most moving and powerful work we have done together — it feels elevated in every way — and I can’t WAIT until you all get to hear it.”

Keep an eye out for further teasers and a tracklist reveal.
