Nashville-based indie/alt-pop star behn has perfectly captured the the exhaustion of yet another situationship in his new single “nights out.” From soothing acoustic guitar chords to echoing vocals, behn has mastered crafting the indie-pop single that is worthy of being put on repeat, playing in your room as you stare up at the ceiling.
“I wrote this song about the cyclical nature of situationships (which feel common in my generation) and how one person often gets hurt more than the other,” behn said on the inspiration behind the track.
“There’s usually an imbalance of commitment in those relationships, where one person hangs on for too long, and for reasons they don’t understand. When I wrote this, I had mixed feelings about the role I was playing in a relationship, and those feelings led me to write from the perspective of someone who’s exhausted yet tied to another.”
Getting that phone call, that text, knowing it will lead to nothing good is far from a unique experience. That “hey” is a universal tagline for nothing but stress and overthinking. And just like behn says, “nights out lead to blackouts lead to good times,” but that feeling in the morning of “You know I won’t say no, baby / That’s not good.”
The lyrics declare the endless rotation of love-filled nights, of connection and illusions of a potential future, only to be crushed the next morning when you realize you have fallen into the vicious cycle and have to go back to staring at your phone all day waiting for the same text.
Our up-and-coming male version of Taylor Swift is nothing short of genius with his lyrics, creating a swimmingly spellbinding, head-bopping hit guaranteed to be added to your playlist after the first listen and then stay on loop for the next hour.
