The haze did not deter fans who flooded Philadelphia’s hybrid TD Pavilion for Japanese Breakfast and Death Cab for Cutie.
Following an iconic appearance at Bonnaroo, indie-pop band Japanese Breakfast (also known as J Brekkie) returned to their old stomping grounds as the first of many shows this summer supporting Death Cab for Cutie on their latest album tour. The eight-song set consisted of crowd favorites, including “Be Sweet” and “Kokomo, IN” from their 2021 album, Jubilee, along with “Honey Water” and “Mega Circuit” from their most recent album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women).
Japanese Breakfast hails from the Philadelphia area, revealing to the crowd that they once played a set at a church in the area where barely any people had come. Lead singer and primary songwriter Michelle Zauner shared a photo to her Instagram ahead of the tour with the caption, “INDIE GIRL finally gets to open for her favorite band!!” To return and support American rock band Death Cab for Cutie felt not only full circle, but well deserved.
When not busy playing festivals or in the studio, Zauner continues to weave the nostalgia and sentimentality found in the music into other endeavors, recently announcing her second collaboration with jewelry designer Catbird, extending the band’s aesthetic beyond the music with a personal and jewel-toned touch.
For Japanese Breakfast, the return to Philadelphia was a reminder of how far the band has come, and how their music resonated throughout the years, with fans at the barricade dancing to “Be Sweet” amongst friends and strangers with everyone knowing every word.
