“BackBack” is the latest introspective indie-pop single to come from Beirut-born, LA-based singer Luke Armstrong. It’s the type of song that comes on during the height of a late-night summer drive.
Co-written with and produced by Daniel James, Armstrong shares this vulnerable single with the world 3 years after it was created. His vocals are just as raw and open as his lyrics, and he hits a beautiful, light falsetto on the pre-chorus. The melody in “BackBack” and Armstrong’s vocals are two puzzle pieces that fit together wonderfully.
The lyrics are a reflection of Armstrong’s mature outlook on the aftermath of a breakup. It’s heartbreaking, for sure, but he treats it as a potential opportunity for growth. The central theme is self-reflection, guided by the simple yet deeply introspective question: what can I learn from this? The lyrics also examine the benefit of hindsight through lines such as “memories are kind.”
