It’s here: a new, big and blue The Moss album.

This album, Big Blue Moon, released on April 24, was announced alongside the release of the album’s debut single, “Your Way.” Although the concept of a new Moss album was a surprise to fans according to the comment section of their Instagram announcement post, some of the tracks may seem familiar to those who had the chance to catch the indie rock band on their last tour.

“Maybe you heard it on the road last year,” the caption of the Instagram post reads,

It’s about people being phony’s, and listening to yourself and doing your own thing. Lots of more info to come, but for now, enjoy this surprise release!”

Apparently for this new Moss era, the band decided to get in touch with their spontaneous side. Along with the surprise release and announcement of “Your Way” and Big Blue Moon, the album’s second single “Devil’s Lettuce,” a wispy, groovy jam track, was released in secret in early April. No social media teasing, no promotion, just letting the algorithm take the single wherever it wanted to take it.

Coincidentally enough, this go-with-the-flow approach ties into the band’s lead singer, Tyke James’, lifestyle. From living the van life in Santa Cruz to surfing in France, The Moss’ singer doesn’t seem to limit himself to a region or an opportunity. Luckily, somewhere along the way The Moss project was born in Oahu, Hawaii, when James was a teen, stretching all the way to Salt Lake City where it has been flourishing ever since.

Dating back to 2015, The Moss has explored a little bit of everything. Their 2023 breakout EP, Insomnia, blended indie and surf rock with honest lyricism that didn’t go unnoticed by listeners, paving the way for a couple of singles and their groovy, introspective 2025 EP Free Ride to diversify their sound and themes.

Although Free Ride was just released on Oct. 3 of last year, The Moss had more to share: a 9-track album, Big Blue Moon. The Moss is feeding us with a ton of new music, but worry not; each track has its own charm. Right off the bat, “Big Blue Moon,” mixes their signature indie rock sound with reggae influences to paint a story of what it’s like to slow down and pay attention to life unfolding in front of your eyes.

Just when you think you’ve pinpointed a certain sound or genre this album is following, the band switches it up. The Spanish guitar influence on “Galleria” stands out from the electronic, beat-based instrumental breakdown on “Canyon” that flows into the synth-leaning surf-rock disco track “How You Love.” It’s come to a point where it’s difficult to describe their sound with pre-existing genres, as they are doing their own thing and mixing influences from all over the place. I mean… talk about an exciting album!

Knowing how free-spirited and grounded this band is, maybe The Moss is trying to relay the message that staying in one place isn’t going to bring about growth, within yourself or in others. Exploring different sounds and experiences in life is what is giving them inspiration to create new music. By doing this, they are also proving their versatility as a band; name any sound and they can probably make it.

There are fun, more light-hearted moments on this album like with “Devil’s Lettuce,” but there are also some vulnerable, heavier moments presented with “Passport.” There are life lessons and confrontation on Big Blue Moon, making it a project that almost anyone can relate to in some way.

The Moss is currently on their Spring Tour, which will wrap up in Denver on May 14. In addition to playing some fan-favorite oldies, they also are playing some of their new songs, making these shows a time capsule and a taste of their new direction all in one. You can find tickets here.
