From top to bottom Bridgestone Arena was full, as Evanescence made their way back to Nashville for a night that reminded everyone just why their band excels at combining crushing heaviness with hauntingly beautiful tracks. They were accompanied by two other completely different kinds of bands that fall under the rock/metal umbrella, Spiritbox and Nova Twins.
Opening up the night with a bang was Nova Twins who brought an exciting and high-energy set that kept the audience’s attention for the entire duration. The mix of punk, alternative, grime, and electronica worked perfectly on the big stage and, after both singers of Nova Twins had had the whole place singing along and pumping fists in the air, we had new fans. After the performance of hits such as “Antagonist” and “Choose Your Fighter,” thousands of people were going home with a new band to listen to.
Next up were the metal-defining powerhouses known as Spiritbox. It is easy to see why everyone has been talking about these guys since they burst onto the scene. Courtney LaPlante absolutely kills it with her screaming/singing duality throughout their entire set. Spiritbox are all about precision – from their thrashing guitar riffs to the subtle atmospheric additions, every bit of it has you engaged and in your seat (as it’s still somewhat tough to stand at Bridgestone arena). Tracks like “Circle With Me,” “Jaded” and “Holy Roller” all delivered the massive sound we expect from Spiritbox, making hundreds into fans if they weren’t already! If you love their recorded work, you are going to love them live.
As the energy was building and the crowd was getting louder, we heard the familiar introduction before a loud blast of guitar took over and Evanescence took the stage. From the moment the lights faded and Amy Lee stepped out onto the stage she captivated everyone with her gothic glamour and powerful voice. We all knew right then it was going to be a special night.
They played a set filled with old favorites and newer hits, bringing long-time fans many memories and showing us that Evanescence is continuing to prove their worth on the stage. Tracks such as “Going Under,” “Call Me When You’re Sober” and “Lithium” were met with hundreds of singalongs. Every bit of it was incredibly tight and perfectly executed by the whole band as they played massive, ringing chords.
Perhaps the most iconic and emotional song of the night was when Amy Lee sat down at the piano for an awe-inspiring performance of “My Immortal”. Hundreds of phone flashlights filled the arena and, coupled with her emotional and haunting voice, the performance sent shivers down spines. Following up on “My Immortal”, the song “Forever Without You” off of the recently released album, Sanctuary, was equally heartbreaking. Cuts like a knife and nearly half the room was in tears by the end of this one.
Visually, Evanescence upped the stakes with a tour that featured massive LED screens and an absolutely perfect display of dramatic lighting and special effects. They told visual stories with their graphics from a haunted gothic mansion to a TV Tower with static to clips of them actually performing the songs and, honestly, you were almost equally drawn to the visual experience as well.
Towards the end of the evening, Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox, Georgia and Amy from Nova Twins joined Amy Lee out on stage and performed “Fight Like a Girl”. This was truly one of the most epic and powerful performances by Evanescence yet, leaving the Bridgestone Arena in a frenzy! They played an astonishing 21 songs and proved why they are still a force to be reckoned with. Definitely don’t sleep on this tour!
From Nova Twins’ Infectious energy, to Spiritbox’s Heavy modern sound, to Evanescence’s master class in atmosphere and pure emotion; last night truly was a spectacular one filled with all the things one could want from a live music experience and then some!
