Therapy, touching grass, unplugging… There are numerous ways to protect your mental health. And it seems that with each passing year, the priority to take care of oneself becomes more and more urgent.
We just celebrated Mental Health Awareness Month in May with the release of our latest issue of Melodic Magazine. Inside, we feature conversations with artists like Of Virtue, who highlight the special way that music can be a source of light in a dark time.
The conversation continues with Kei Henderson on the latest episode of Won of One: A PLLRS Podcast. The Third & Hayden founder and CEO sat down with host Reg Calixte, where they discussed the importance of mental health. Henderson has established a Personal Development Fund for artists, which they can draw from at their convenience. If these artists find a program or a practice that will help them get to a good place mentally, help them feel good, or prevent them from burnout, this fund will allow them to take care of business.
Henderson shares,
“It’s free money to go out and take care of yourself. Ultimately, for us, mental health is not a buzzword. It is the foundation of how you become successful. I want to make sure the human is good, but also, since I’m in a partnership with a behemoth of a company (Live Nation), I want to make sure they’re good as well for the bottom line.”
This comes at a time when artists are more commonly pulling out of tours or scrapping albums due to exhaustion or stress. A recent study even revealed that 86% of artists report periods of mental strain during their careers.
Aside from mental health, Henderson and Calixte also touch on rapper and songwriter 21 Savage. Henderson was one of the first to believe in the Atlanta talent, back when 21 Savage only had 5K followers on Instagram. She then took on 21 Savage as a client, and he was able to build a career that took off after he released his debut mixtape, The Slaughter Tape, in 2016.
