It has been over 20 years since global icon Akon released his debut album, Trouble. His sophomore album, Konvicted, follows close behind. Konvicted was just shy of hitting number one on the Billboard 200 chart when it debuted in 2006, but its hit singles “I Wanna Love You” and “Smack That” both charted at numbers one and two on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Over the years, Akon continued to generate much buzz and acclaim for his music, and the artists he has collaborated with are just as notable. From Lady Gaga to T-Pain, Akon knows how to foster and promote talent, holding a unique place as a founder, producer, and songwriter. He is also a successful businessman, growing sustainable ventures outside of the music industry.
Akon recently stopped by Won of One, where he chatted with host Reg Calixte about his successes and the unconventional trajectory of his career. He explains the way that Wyclef Jean inspired him to turn his life around, sharing,
“When Wyclef met me, I would come to the studio because I was running from the cops. The studio was my alibi. ’Clef knew I was up to something ‘cause I come there sweating in a different car. After a while, he pulled me aside like, ‘You got to chill, man. You have some good talent. You need to focus. Figure it out.’”
Calixte and Akon then continue to discuss the promotion of various artists, Konvicted ’s 20-year anniversary, the controversy around Stadium, his recently released album Beautiful Day, and his upcoming plans to release a country album. Akon explains,
“We got to the point where we did real research. I didn’t realize how many country music fans wanted to hear an Akon album. They were like, ‘We want to hear you do original records.’ So, we started to pivot to doing original records, and I’m going to do a specialty album with all of my hits redone in country after I release the [album of original country music songs].”
Overall, Akon’s episode offers an in-depth look into one of the 21st century’s most popular figures in music. He knows what he is doing in this industry and what he is doing outside of the music business. Those wondering how to become a trailblazing mogul will find Akon’s conversation very useful, informative, and entertaining. You can watch the full episode below.
