Up-and-coming pop star Carter Rubin just gave us his new single, “cost of finding out.” If there’s anything people should take away from this, it’s that Carter has all the tools ready in his arsenal to make it in the music scene.
After dropping his last song “ready when ur not” in December, fans felt that this was just the start of his next era and they knew it was going to be nothing short of amazing. “I’m so beyond proud of this song,” Carter shares on his Instagram announcement post. “So much more on the way”.

This single has been under wraps for longer than people may know; it was started in June 2025, and felt almost complete at the time. Later down the line he felt the urge to add a bridge to complement it, which greatly paid off. In addition to putting the finishing touches on “cost of finding out,” Carter took the first half of 2026 to zero in on his sound and work on his lyricism. Taking inspiration from artists like Lorde and The 1975, he’s beginning to lean into the synth-pop realm.
Opening on the acoustic guitar, Carter manages to perfectly capture the feeling of falling for someone almost instantly and, after finding out they’re bad news, pursuing them anyway: “So let me play with fire / I gotta touch the stove / ‘Cause how else will I know?” Known for his familiar metaphors and relatable, gut-punch lyrics, Carter Rubin is already on the way to being an essential piece in the pop world.
Keeping the momentum going, Carter confirmed on a recent Instagram livestream that he’s currently working on his second EP. He also has a few more singles lined up for this year, assuring that his fans will stay busy with new music.
