No one can outrun Susannah Joffe’s pace of growth as the next major indie star. Joffe’s striking visuals, country-western charm, and unparalleled creativity in production have secured her as a rising force. Genuine and amusing, Joffe puts her all into connecting with her fans. In her latest single, “Horses Can’t Outrun Me,” Joffe experiments with creating a true pop song for the first time in three years, and in doing so, has created a certified hit.

Lyrically, “Horses Can’t Outrun Me” is devastating, but sonically, it gives the same thrilling feeling as playing Rainbow Road on Mario Kart. This juxtaposition turns the song into an intensely beautiful experience. It’s filled with mystique, a strong drum line, and difficult but necessary reflections: for example, “You got me high on half truths.”

In the verses, we’re told a story of a toxic relationship through the lines “Regret isn’t a race / I’ll take a ribbon for first place / I’m taking my heart off my sleeve / ‘Cause love’s a dangerous thing / You fooled me once and fooled me twice / Broke my heart then stayed the night / I loved and lost then paid the price.”

Then, the song’s chorus describes a deep-rooted need for escape, saying “Horses can’t outrun me / Feet on fire / God I’m tired / Heaven’s where you can’t reach / So I’m headed to the country.” The main character’s chosen mission of escape is to sprint toward the country, and truly no one will be able to catch her. Her sense of urgency is reinforced by Joffe’s ethereal vocal flips that feel like a runner’s breaths. The drums feel like a runner’s footsteps. The track boasts a fast-spoken outro to close out the story.

Joffe has always stayed close with her fans. Currently, she interacts directly with fans through her Instagram broadcast channel, texting them updates on songwriting, sneak peek voice memos of upcoming songs, and of course, funny memes and polls.

If you’re based in New York, you won’t want to miss her first headlining performance, happening at Baby’s All Right on July 10th. You can buy tickets here!
