On June 25, Kaleia released her latest single “Make It Mean Something,” her first one this year. In collaboration with producer Matthew Castello, the lively piece is well-balanced between the past and the present.
In “Make It Mean Something,” Tte singer-songwriter weaves together elements of funk and R&B over an early-2000s pop foundation. The melody is so intoxicating that it’s easy to get lost in, but a closer listen to the lyrics tells you that Kaleia wants people to do more than just dance.
With a voice smooth and rich like honey, Kaleia croons over the melody, lamenting the way her significant other has failed to make her feel loved in any measure. The lack of words of lovely affirmation have her claiming that she’s “had more to say to a wall” than to them. “Make It Mean Something” asks all the hard — yet right — questions, and serves as a fantastic reminder that a little communication can go a long way.
At the core of this groovy song is a message to lovers and friends alike: “Whatever’s on the tip of your tongue, you better make it mean something, or mean nothing at all.”
