Estella Dawn returns with a raw, entirely self-produced, written, and recorded single titled “Can You Believe.” She pours her heart out over an indie pop, acoustic guitar-heavy melody. The New Zealander’s accent adds a pleasant twang to her voice that’s very reminiscent of an American Southern accent. That little detail makes the song that much better, as it suits the raw, open energy of the song.
“Can You Believe” feels like we’re listening to a lengthy voicemail playing on speaker phone, or only listening to one side of an intimate conversation. Estella’s lyrics are dripping with honesty. She’s repeatedly asking her significant other if they can believe the things she’s still doing, like showing up drunk or leaving salt behind in their sheets.
Estella’s very candid, but she’s also extremely self-aware. The record begins with her admitting that she’s “got bad habits stringing [her] along.” Much of her self-worth and happiness is wrapped up in this relationship that feels very unbalanced, but she knows that, and that level of self-awareness is reflected in every lyrical aspect of the song.
The song strikes the perfect balance between raw, unfiltered lyricism and easy-listening melodies. Knowing that Estella Dawn had a hand in every part of the song’s creation makes “Can You Believe” feel even more authentic. The singer-songwriter isn’t afraid to look inward, so neither should we.
