Pensacola-based garage-grunge band Noiseheads hit you with an explosive wall of sound on their new single, “Hey.” The lyric video indicates that “this is a song for those who like songs, for those walking around the kitchen looking for a lil snack.”

A slacker mentality is easily recognized in the mood of this song, but lyrically, it feels a bit more like trying to motivate yourself to leave the apartment. Blaring guitars and drums settle down when the verse hits, creating a steady, driving rhythm that demands you sway along. The juxtaposition of the intro/chorus into the verse produces a hypnotic jerk: “I can’t complain because I complain too much / but not enough to make it different.” The chorus hits heavy again, chanting “HEY YOU, settle down! ‘Cause something is better than nothing.”

An anthem to the counterculture, it is engaging and to the point, creating a rain-soaked earworm that will leave you feeling nostalgic and satisfied, a raw anthem for most of us who are tired and still trying our best. Fans of bands like Turnstile and Joyce Manor will especially love this track.
