Jealousy is a disease that can infect any relationship, even our friendships. India Thieriot‘s new single “Downfall” depicts a downward mental spiral of emotions that switch between envy and admiration for your friend’s successes.
In the song, Thieriot grapples with the inner turmoil of not knowing how to be happy for someone else because you wish for those victories for yourself — a challenging feeling to face. Resentment can burn the love you have for a friend to a crisp.
Thieriot plays with the emotional whiplash of quietly resenting someone while cheering them on from a distance, then deals with the guilt of feeling like a failure herself due to the other person’s achievements. She confronts this rollercoaster of emotions singing, “And now I’m questioning everything / Am I irrelevant / I miss when we were friends / But I’m just not that evolved / So I’m praying for your downfall.”
The singer-songwriter openly admits wanting this person to make it big, while secretly wanting the same for herself. Praying for someone’s downfall, after all, may be the downfall of yourself, as well.
