On May 10th, the subterranean depths of The Caverns became the perfect cathedral for Apocalyptica to unleash a haunting tribute to Metallica. Beneath ancient stone ceilings dripping with atmosphere, the Finnish cello trio transformed the underground venue into something emotional and overwhelmingly heavy without relying on traditional guitars or vocals for most of the night. It went beyond what your standard concert usually is, as it felt like descending into the core of the songs themselves.
Apocalyptica had no openers for the evening and that was perfectly fine! From the opening notes, the acoustics of the cave wrapped every cello strike with a natural reverb that amplified both the elegance and aggression of the performance. Songs like “Master of Puppets,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and “Seek & Destroy” took on entirely new personalities in the cavern environment, balancing classical cello melodies with the crushing intensity that thrash metal is known for, and it was all delivered with the intensity that Apocalyptica brings to every performance. Every bow movement carried an elegance to the metal sounds they produced, and the crowd responded with the kind of esteem usually reserved for sacred rituals rather than metal shows.
What still makes Apocalyptica remarkable after all these years is their ability to preserve the spirit of Metallica and thrash in general, while completely reshaping the experience into something uniquely their own, especially with the new takes on songs like “One,” that had James Hetfield’s voice over attached to it in a spoken word format. The performance moved effortlessly between moments of thunderous distortion and near-silent bridges, where the faint echo of strings bouncing off cave walls held the audience completely captive. The whole crowd sang the words to “Nothing Else Matters” as the strings delivered a mesmerizingly haunting rendition of the fan favorite song. The Caverns itself became part of the performance, adding an organic depth that no arena or theater could replicate. The lighting design was immaculate as well, with the members of the band perfectly lit, while the walls of the cave was lit up red and blue, and highlighted with the natural darkness of the caverns.
By the end of the night, it was clear this wasn’t simply nostalgia for Metallica fans. Apocalyptica delivered a performance that stood on its own merit, powerful, theatrical, and emotionally charged. In a venue already known for unforgettable experiences, they managed to create one that felt genuinely singular. Few shows leave an audience stunned in silence before erupting into applause, but deep beneath Pelham, Tennessee, Apocalyptica accomplished exactly that.
Apocalyptica’s US tour continues through June 7th of 2026.
