Bleachers have released their brand new single “i’m not joking” off their upcoming album everyone for ten minutes, out May 22 via Dirty Hit.

Right off the bat, “i’m not joking” feels like a sharp left turn from anything else the band has shared from this record so far. It opens on a punchy, almost funky groove that immediately stands out, with Jack Antonoff leaning into a style of production that feels different from the rest of the rollout. The first few seconds land with a real sense of surprise; less of a slow build, more of a “woah” moment as the song snaps into place with falsetto touches and a rhythm that’s hard to ignore.

Written by the full band and produced by Antonoff, the song centers on the kind of love that doesn’t build over time — it just happens. “Ooh, I’m not joking, it was love at first sight / Good Lord, I found you,” he sings, keeping things direct. It doesn’t come across as exaggerated or overly polished. Instead, it feels immediate and real, which lines up with the story behind it.

The lyrics move in a way that feels natural, never too heavy-handed. “I want the things that are hard to get easier” stands out as the most revealing line, cutting through everything else with the simple idea of wanting something that doesn’t feel forced. Around that, it’s the smaller moments — holding doors, starting the car, just being there — that give the song its shape.

The bridge opens things up, especially with the repeated “shout it out” pushing the song into something bigger without losing what makes it work. Like “the van,” there’s a cinematic quality to it, but this time it feels more present. It’s easy to picture this playing in the middle of a romantic comedy, right when everything starts to fall into place.

On “i’m not joking,” Bleachers focuses on instinct — what it feels like to know something right away and not question it. It’s a different sound for them on this record, but it lands in a way that feels intentional. It also feels like the kind of song that’s going to be a lot of fun to hear live on their upcoming tour.
