Bleachers transformed a postponed Shadow of the City weekend into an unforgettable album release show

Date:

This past Saturday, Bleachers celebrated the release of their brand new album everyone for ten minutes with a special home state show at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park. Originally, the weekend was supposed to center around the band’s annual Shadow of the City festival at the Stone Pony Summer Stage, but after rain and heavy winds forced the festival to be postponed until August 28, the band quickly pivoted and turned the weekend into something different: a free indoor album release show right in the heart of New Jersey.

Even with the weather chaos, fans still showed up early, lining the streets in ponchos and under umbrellas hours before doors opened. Considering The Stone Pony only holds 850 people, the whole thing immediately felt special — less like a backup plan and more like one of those shows people would end up talking about for years.

Opening the night was Bike Routes, an up and coming New Jersey band who were also originally scheduled to perform at Shadow of the City. They kicked off the evening perfectly, bringing a ton of energy and immediately getting the crowd moving before the main event. By the time their set wrapped up, the room already felt electric.

Bleachers hit the stage at 8:05 p.m. to a massive roar from the crowd. They opened with “sideways,” the first track from everyone for ten minutes, and from that point on, the room was complete mayhem. Fans screamed every lyric back at the band from the very first song, setting the tone for the rest of the night.

That’s something that always stands out at a Bleachers show: the sense of community. It never feels like people are casually standing around waiting for the songs they know. Everyone is completely locked in the entire time. Whether it was newer songs like “the van” and “dirty wedding dress” or older favorites, the crowd treated every moment like it mattered.

“NEW JERSEY!!!!” lead singer Jack Antonoff screamed early into the set, immediately earning one of the biggest reactions of the night. The energy somehow only kept building from there. Songs like “Modern Girl,” “Jesus Is Dead,” and “How Dare You Want More” turned the packed venue into one giant singalong, with the audience nearly overpowering the band at certain points.

Part of what made the show feel so memorable was how loose and celebratory everything was. Billed as “Bleachers and friends,” the night featured multiple surprise guests throughout the set. During “How Dare You Want More,” Jack brought out his dad Rick Antonoff, which immediately sent the crowd into another wave of cheers. Later in the show, assistant engineer Jack Manning joined the band for “you and forever,” while Annie DiRusso and Hank Heaven came out for “Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call.” Chris Conley of Saves the Day also joined the band for “Tiny Moves,” adding another fun surprise to an already packed night.

The acoustic section of the show ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the night. “Margaret,” “Isimo,” and “Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call” shifted the room into something much more intimate, even with the crowd still hanging onto every word. Antonoff spent a lot of time interacting with fans up front during this section, joking back and forth before suddenly turning sincere for a moment.

“You know what, it brings me to a sincere moment,” he told the crowd. “I see you, and I see you guys. I know a lot of people in this crowd. Thank you for traveling so much to celebrate this weekend!”

The crowd erupted into applause before Antonoff added, “You’re never gonna forget this weekend. I’m not gonna forget it.”

The moment honestly summed up the entire night. Even though Shadow of the City got postponed, it never felt like anyone in the room was dwelling on that anymore. Instead, it felt like everyone was just excited to be there together celebrating the album release weekend in New Jersey. In a venue that small, hearing Antonoff thank fans for traveling in and making the weekend happen made the whole show feel even more personal.

By the final stretch of the set, the energy somehow reached another level. Bleachers closed the night with three of their biggest songs — “I Wanna Get Better,” “Don’t Take the Money,” and “Stop Making This Hurt” — turning the already chaotic room into a complete frenzy. Every lyric came back louder than the last as the crowd jumped, screamed, and danced through the final moments of the show.

For a night that almost looked completely different just days earlier, Bleachers managed to turn an album release celebration into something incredibly intimate and uniquely New Jersey. Between the nonstop energy, surprise guests, and a crowd that treated every song like an anthem, the show never once felt like a replacement for Shadow of the City. If anything, it felt like something even rarer. Out of all the times I’ve seen Bleachers live, this easily ended up being one of my favorite shows I’ve ever attended — the kind of night that reminded everyone exactly why this band means so much to so many people.
