meg elsier releases “sportscar [scrapped]” from upcoming deluxe edition of debut album

Date:

When she released her debut album, spittake, last year, meg elsier received massive acclaim. The likes of DIY Magazine, Ones To Watch, and CLASH were impressed by the emotional storytelling on the album, along with its rich, genre-blending sound. meg elsier is described as one of indie-rock’s “most exciting new voices” in a current press release, as she can seamlessly fuse the funny with the serious in her songs, keeping things honest and sincere. She is gearing up to release a deluxe edition of spittake in July, but before she does, meg is releasing “sportscar [scrapped]” as the lead single.

On “sportscar [scrapped],” meg addresses her changing reality by comparing it to the changing state of the car she drives. Throughout the song, she acknowledges that her car is no longer serving her. She sings, “I have a sportscar, it’s falling apart nicely” and “I haven’t worked too hard to keep her going.” Overall, she gives us downhearted commentary on how things have changed for her, and the state of the car represents how that is all going. As she is immersed in the memories she has of the car, meg is guided by light instrumentals and a relaxed rock beat, giving the track a cool but sentimental feel. You can check it out in the live video below, which was created with meg’s longtime collaborator, Jacq Justice.

About the single, meg shares,

“‘sportscar’ is a really interesting addition to the deluxe, specifically because ‘spittake’ almost had a completely different identity. There was a time when I was playing with the idea of naming the album ‘Check Engine Light On.’ The influence of cars and how they move you through life is something I didn’t realize was so important to ‘spittake’ until after I’d written it.

“I was really identifying with my beat-up car my mother gave me. It was this thing handed to me that I treated like shit… But that kinda was my life at the time. Something that was shiny and fast, a veneer, but if you checked under the hood, it was burning out. The oil was dark and the engine was smoking. I would dye my hair (new paint job), get dolled up (took her to the car wash), and perform so well socially when I went out (that V8 engine was purring, baby), but that was all it was. I had a coming-to moment like, ‘This isn’t sustainable and I’m about to crash out.’”

meg just wrapped a tour with Blondshell in North America, where she played to sold out crowds in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn, to name a few. She is now on tour with Liz Cooper until June 26. You can find tickets and the full list of dates here.
