Kate Vogel sets her emotions free on “broke up on my birthday”

Date:

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Kate Vogel’s latest single “broke up on my birthday” offers laid-back acoustic pop optimism through hopeful lyrics and smooth guitar strumming. The single is Vogel’s first release since her 2021 album Someone I’m Proud Of

“Yeah we broke up on my birthday / Did it over it’s a new day / You can’t ruin my, ruin my, ruin my, ruin my year”, Vogel opens with. The song’s lyrics have a poignant air to them, and the singer delivers them with an earnest sincerity wrapped within her level-headed and soft yet impactful voice. The song’s chorus ticks up a notch and features a layered vocal arrangement that sweetens an already sugary sound.

Vogel sings of being “not quite sober”, but being “finally clear” about her own feelings and the subject she sings of. In a popular music landscape filled with confessional attempts at relatability, Vogel succeeds at baring her emotions without reading as desperate for sympathy. The song wraps up quickly, tracking at exactly two and a half minutes, but delivers the singer’s message impactfully: sometimes it’s best to let the strife of the past “fade into the wind”.

You can listen to “broke up on my birthday” on platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.
