Caroline Carter confronts fear head-on with moody, sophomore EP ‘Fetch!’ — EP Review

Date:

After nine months of silence, Nashville-based indie artist Caroline Carter returns with their sophomore EP, Fetch!, out now via Too Fine Records. Led by focus track “Leg Room,” the project blends moody, post-grunge textures with a more intimate singer-songwriter feel.

Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Carter pulls a lot from their experience growing up and navigating identity in the queer South. Now based in Nashville, that perspective comes through in a way that feels personal without being closed off. There’s also a clear thread from a background in musical theatre.

Fetch! feels like a real step forward for Carter. It moves beyond the softer indie pop of their debut I Did What I Promised and into something a little sharper and more unpredictable. You can hear that shift starting with “Watchdog,” as the EP leans into a punchier, slightly glitchy sound, mixing raw distortion, flashes of bubble-grunge, and lyrics that don’t hold anything back.

The EP is less about what scares us and more about why we keep circling back to those things anyway. Instead of treating surrender like failure, Carter frames it as the moment where they stops pretending they’re fine and just face things as they are. As they put it, it’s about “throwing your hands up… not to give up, but to acknowledge your weaknesses and move forward anyway.”

To celebrate the release, Caroline Carter will perform at The Blue Room in Nashville on May 29.
