Tampa-based outfit Nevertel has been quietly — or rather, quite loudly — accumulating over 165 million streams and a Top 3 Active Rock hit. Now, fresh off their debut project Start Again, the band returns with “OTHERWISE,” a track that feels like a deliberate step into a grittier future for the band.
Produced by vocalists Jeremy Michael and Raul Lopez, “OTHERWISE” is a weird and expansive collision of early grunge and electronic production. The track is built on tension, featuring organic textures you wouldn’t normally find layered into modern rock, such as crushed water bottles, zippers, and Michael’s beatboxing over the first verse.
This new production style shows a boredom with generic presets and a desire to opt for something more personal and punishing, as Kerrang! described the track. The accompanying music video, directed by Orie McGinness, shows the band under siege in a damp warehouse.
Nevertel has a busy year ahead of them as they’ve just joined Wage War on tour before they’ll cross the Atlantic for Download Festival and their UK/EU headline tour, kicking off June 15 in Glasgow. Buy tickets here.
