Almost a year ago, Boy In Space gave the world Copium. The five-track EP was meant to help listeners cope with whatever struggles they were facing, hence its medicinal-sounding title. The songs touched on personal moments in the Swedish artist’s life, from the complication of falling in love to the overwhelming aftermath of heartbreak. By releasing these tracks, Boy In Space was releasing parts of himself that he held onto for too long. In doing so, he inspired others to do the same. Additionally, he allowed new parts of himself to flourish, resulting in a healthier and more creative headspace. With this new outlook, he created The Butterfly Affect, a project that focuses on internal change rather than outward change—an “affect” instead of an “effect.”
The first three tracks on the EP consist of the previously released “Dancing On Dynamite,” “Too Much to Lose,” and “Take It Easy.” They explore three very different relationships while emphasizing the persistent nature of desire. On “Dancing On Dynamite,” for instance, we hear about how an unstable relationship can form with someone despite all the best intentions. It is the driving force of desire that keeps the situation afloat, which is a concept that also comes about on “Too Much to Lose.” Here, Boy In Space sings, “I want you, baby / You want me too / Put my hands all over you / I need you, baby / You need me too / But we got too much to lose.” While it seems obvious that a relationship wouldn’t make sense at the moment, Boy In Space can’t help but feel attracted. He tries to fight his desires on “Take It Easy,” but finds that he’ll “be any shape that you need me” regardless.
The final two tracks on The Butterfly Affect are fresh for listeners, starting with “Burning Down The House.” It features the new pop-country sound that Boy In Space has showcased on the previous tracks, placing listeners in a space filled with sweet strings and prominent guitar strums. All the while, the song plays out like a ballad, with Boy In Space trying to prevent a metaphoric fire from destroying all he has with someone. Melodically, he sings, “Baby, there’s a fire and it’s burning down the house / Would you let me in so we can try to put it out?” A similar feel comes through on “Sway,” which closes the EP. The sentimental sounds of the acoustic guitar guide Boy In Space as he sings, “This room is a prison / I wait for your call / I’m on the edge and I’m ready to fall.” Even though he touches on the strain of a long-distance relationship, there is still some romance to it that makes the song more tenderhearted than brokenhearted.
About the EP, Boy In Space explains,
“‘The Butterfly Affect’ is a bridge into what I’m becoming and the music I was to make in the future. I really spent a lot of time honing my lyricism, and it was so much fun working with more organic elements with these songs than I did with ‘Copium.’ It’s been challenging to let people into the stories of my life, but honestly, it has been so rewarding.”
