Boy In Space is gearing up for his upcoming album, The Man Who Lost It All, with his latest single “Sex, Drugs & Money.” The project by Sweden’s singer-songwriter Robin Lundbäck channels the likes of Kacey Musgraves and Medium Build as he sings of an everlasting love.
One of the first things you notice in “Sex, Drugs & Money” is the distance between the listener and the instruments. The guitars were clearly recorded at a distance from the microphone in order to capture the recording room’s subtle echo and space. This choice in production helps give it the feel of a live recording, which in turns adds to the singer-songwriter/folk style that Boy In Space is trying to achieve.
After the first verse, we hear this technique used again on the drums, with a compressor placed on the snare to ensure that the rhythm still punches through the mix. While most of the instrumentation is defined, a harmonica decoratively placed throughout “Sex, Drugs & Money” gives it a softness to contrast the sharper textures.
Boy In Space has revealed that his fiancée is the muse of “Sex, Drugs & Money,” describing the song as “an expression for the lovebirds out there who have a hard time putting their feelings into words.” Despite what the name suggests, this song has a whimsical softness to it, as the singer reveals he “can’t compare to you and the things that you do.” This imitate softness is highlighted in the second verse as he lists comparisons of his lover to different things, including “a family tape of an old vacation.” Boy In Space keeps his lyrics simple, but it’s this simplicity that makes the song feel vulnerable and personal.
Boy In Space’s “Sex, Drugs & Money” highlights how a seemingly simple folk-pop song can be elevated by clever production and clear sincerity in the lyrics. The song is set to feature on Boy In Space’s upcoming album, The Man Who Lost It All, out October 23rd.
