GRAMMY-winning, Tony- and Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter and Epic Records recording artist Sara Bareilles sets her new album, Good Grief, for release on August 28.
This marks Bareilles’ seventh studio album and her first since her 2019 GRAMMY-award winning project Amidst the Chaos. As the title suggests, the record reckons with loss, but even in its darkest moments there is a steadfast pull towards hope.
“This whole collection of songs felt like transmissions rather than a deliberate attempt to make sense of the world,” says Bareilles.
“My deepest hope is that ‘Good Grief’ provides some kind of comfort or catharsis.”
Alongside the album announcement, Bareilles has also announced the record’s lead single “Home.” With its warm, folky influences, Bareilles encourages listeners to confront their grief rather than bury it down, singing “What is broken cannot heal until it’s known and loved by name.” The song was inspired by a conversation Bareilles had with Stephen Colbert and Anderson Cooper about grief and loss on Cooper’s podcast.
Bareilles says the single “feels like an invitation and a tone setter for the specificity and depth of this record. It just feels really essential right now. In order for us as humans to really know and understand each other, we have to listen to each other’s stories.”
Rooted in Bareilles’ lived experiences, Good Grief spans a mass of thematic ground. Produced by Bareilles herself, the record boasts defiant anthems for women’s rights, intimate tributes to lost friends, and odes to the unexpected moments of lightness found in the darkest of times.
Fans can also get an intimate look at the recording process, which spanned just 6 days at Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY, in the documentary Sara Bareilles: Good Grief.
The documentary focuses on Bareilles returning to the studio alongside her close friends and collaborators, including drummer
