Piper Connolly has released her killer new single “body bag” ahead of her new EP she’s too much! The EP boasts production credits from Esjay Jones (Billy Corgan, Dave Navarro) and Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft (Gwen Stefani, MGK.) With its pop-rock hooks and driving production, “body bag” is an anthem for the defiant.
The song starts off with a sinister plucky bass line, and as the percussion comes in it feels like danger is slowly creeping up behind you. It’s like if the Jaws theme was written in 2007. The garage band-style production and verses steeped in venom give the song a nostalgic feel with a modern edge. It’s most reminiscent of a few Avril Lavigne albums, most notably 2022’s Love Sux and her 2013 self-titled record.
Connolly wrote the song “from that moment where someone thinks they’ve ended you, but all they really did was give you proof that you’re harder to break than they thought.” It’s an alt-pop revenge anthem, but even more, it’s a song about resilience and empowerment. It takes on the murder-mystery imagery of a track like Paramore‘s “You First” and expands it to be less about karmic retribution and more about coming back stronger than you’ve ever been before.
What really makes this song shine among others with a similar tone is that its focus comes from a toxic friendship rather than a bad relationship. A bad friendship breakup can be just as painful as a romantic one, if not even more. It’s an under-explored storyline in music, and Connolly navigates it with total clarity and a twisted sense of humor.
