Mayday Parade is among the greatest of the 2000s alternative rock scene. Their sound is synonymous with the emo and alternative genre and their debut LP has been hailed as one of the best — and most influential — emo albums of all time by Alternative Press.
The band has continued to amass critical acclaim over the years, but more importantly, they have cultivated a long-standing artist–audience relationship that’s fortified them across changing musical landscapes and the ebb and flow of an unforgiving industry.
In April of 2025, Mayday Parade debuted their most ambitious project yet: a three-album trilogy showcasing just how influential and prolific their songwriting truly is. The trilogy, which has spanned over 30 new tracks, comes to an end with “Sweet Sad Sugar,” creating a triumphant end to the group’s most zealous project yet.
“Sweet Sad Sugar” is infectiously catchy. Mayday Parade has truly mastered the art of an ear-wormy rock-and-roll hook. Despite the heaviness of the guitars, the song still manages to feel light and buoyant. It mimics the lyrical structure in that way. The song tells the story of surviving a relationship that you nearly wouldn’t; it’s about finding a reason to keep moving forward when everything is falling apart.
The video accompanying the song mirrors its infectious energy. The band plays together in a bright warehouse surrounded by flowers, a testament to their enduring chemistry as a band and a stunning visual end to the trilogy that has defined the last two years of their career.
