Rainbow Kitten Surprise is wrapping up the first leg of their North American tour with a few nights in LA before their final show at Red Rocks in Colorado. I was lucky enough to catch them on the first night of their two-night run at the Wiltern, where the genre-bending indie group from North Carolina put on quite the show. Aside from the obvious appeal of RKS’s thumping and groovy songs, what really brought life to their live performance was the band’s boisterous stage presence, led for the most part by lead vocalist Sam Melo. Melo spent the better part of the band’s hour and a half set jumping, kicking, and twirling all over the stage. Each fan looked blissfully captivated by the group, content to dance along to each song they played and even seeming reluctant to leave the venue after RKS had left the stage. Rainbow Kitten Surprise was supported by Kansas City-based group, The Greeting Committee, who opened the show with an explosive performance of songs from their debut album, This Is It.
