Lamb of God Prove They’re Still the Standard in a Night of Pure Mayhem

Date:

On April 14th, Lamb of God rolled into Nashville Municipal Auditorium and delivered exactly what you’d hope for from a band that’s spent decades perfecting controlled chaos. But this wasn’t just their night, it was a stacked lineup of metal mainstays and up and comers that felt more like a mini-festival for modern heavy metal music.

Things kicked off with Sanguisugabogg, the band with the name that no one can say, who wasted zero time setting a tone that was nothing short of unapologetically filthy and aggressive. Their set was short, sharp, and disgusting in the best way, with the Ohio based outfit hitting the crowd with gut-punch riffs, caveman grooves, and a crowd that quickly realized they were in for a very loud night.

Next up, Fit for an Autopsy, who have become a welcome addition to any heavy ticket brought a more atmospheric weight to the set. Their set felt massive, layered, dark, and politically charged without losing any of the brutality, which was wild considering their minimal stage setup. Joe Badolato’s screams echoed through the auditorium as he amped up the crowd’s massive mosh pits. Fit For an Autopsy is a perfect support act to keep the energy building, and they did just that.

Kublai Khan TX is the band you want to get the room moving before your headliner takes the stage, because they have undoubtedly the most hype man energy in the hardcore scene today. Matt Honeycutt knows how to rally the crowd like none other and knows how to turn the floor into complete mayhem. Their brand of hardcore is pure impact, with absolutely no fluff, nor filler. Just breakdown after breakdown that felt like they were designed specifically to test the structural integrity of the venue. The pit exploded, bodies were flying, and suddenly the night felt less like a concert and more like survival and that energy carried over to the main event.

By the time Lamb of God hit the stage, the room was primed. They always open with the kind of swagger only a band of their caliber can carry, wasting no time launching into a set that balanced legacy and intensity, mixed with a little politically charged messaging as he called out the unnecessary wars that we continue to fight over oil. Randy Blythe commanded the stage like the veteran frontman who knows exactly how to control a crowd without ever feeling rehearsed, pacing back and forward across the stage yelling at the crowd to amp them up. His energy was relentless, giving Nashville equal parts chaos and charisma. Mark Morton and Willie Adler delivered razor-sharp riffs that cut through the airwaves of the old auditorium, really giving the old walls a poundin, while the John Campbell and Art Cruz kept everything locked in with punishing precision and that sweet Virginia metal groove.

There is no passive listening at a Lamb of God show, the crowd is wild from start to finish. High energy circle pits that never relented accompanied by continuous crowd surfers that really made security earn their pay for the evening created an evening of metal madness that the world needs more of.  Every time Lamb of God comes through, Randy and crew continue to prove their staying power in the scene and this time they brought a lineup with them that showcased just how strong the current heavy scene really is. If anything, this show proved one simple point: Lamb of God aren’t coasting on legacy, they’re still setting the standard.
