Wishbone never really felt like the end of the story, and with Wishbone Deluxe, Conan Gray takes us back into his world to reveal more of the unknown — and the heartbreak that comes with it. Gray announced the deluxe album on the opening night of his Wishbone World Tour in Minneapolis, Minnesota, giving fans a sneak peek by performing the final track, “The Best,” before releasing it as a single ahead of the deluxe album’s release.

We originally ended Wishbone with “Care,” a song about moving forward while still feeling the pain of losing someone who once felt permanent.

In “Do I Dare,” Gray battles curiosity and caution, questioning whether reaching out is worth risking everything that’s already been healed. “It took a year to repair what I lost, might take another if I call” is the kind of thought that replays in your mind, wanting to reconnect while fearing the damage it could cause.

We then enter “House That Always Rains,” which may seem upbeat in tempo, similar to his earlier track “Caramel,” but emotionally cuts far deeper than expected. Beneath the bright production, a story unfolds about finding safety in the middle of chaos. From the opening line, “They’re shouting, in the house that always shakes,” instability is immediately clear within what’s supposed to feel like home: a place where love should feel safe, but instead feels fragile.

“While I was scared of being left, you were scared of being seen” brings attention to the different fears that exist within the relationships. One is afraid of abandonment, the other is afraid of vulnerability. Both growing up having different paths, both carrying emotional baggage, turn the house into a shared emotional memory.

Having known Gray’s music for so long, the emotional weight behind his music makes this song hit deep for any Conehead.

With little time to recover, Gray takes us into “Door,” which follows the small routines that remain after a relationship ends. The repetition of “I just need to close this door” sounds less like confidence and more like reminding yourself of something you’re not willing to accept. An emotional, but real verse, “I try to find someone else, but it just makes me lonelier,” really strikes because moving forward doesn’t tend to bring comfort all the time; sometimes it makes the absence feel louder.

Transitioning from “Door,” “Moths” is where the door has finally closed. At least that’s what we keep telling ourselves. This one hits right in the heart. When Gray sings, “The door is closed, but the windows open.” Even after closure, part of you still leaves “the windows open,” knowing the moths will come in and slowly destroy what’s left. But that craving for love stays stronger than the fear of the damage it brings.

What feels like the official ending to Wishbone, “The Best” ends the deluxe album by illustrating that feeling of wanting clarity, knowing it’ll reassure both sides. At the same time, it serves as a farewell. The song looks back on the past, comparing who he used to be with who he is now, noticing changes, questioning old decisions, and remembering the nights that hurt the most.

When it feels like he’s about to finish his thought, the song fades out on “Finally wish you the…” leaving us with an unfinished goodbye that replicates the unresolved emotions carried through Wishbone’s entirety.

With Wishbone Deluxe, Gray expands on a journey we thought was finished, filling in emotional gaps that didn’t feel resolved the first time around. Each added track builds onto the story in a way that makes the original album feel more complete, while still leaving space for unanswered questions.
