This past Friday was a big day for music, especially for Los Angeles-based band Out In Front, who released their version of the decade-old hit “The Sound,” originally recorded by The 1975.
Out In Front features lead vocalist Madie Renner alongside bassist Ryen “Dax” Wagner and drummer Isaiah Volk. The trio started out by having jam sessions in Volk’s garage and soon after they became Out In Front.
The band’s take on “The Sound” puts a new spin on the 2016 classic, taking the synthetic electronic instrumentation and replacing it with a more guitar-driven rock vibe that makes us want to jump up and down and lose ourselves in the beat.
One of the most noticeable differences between the two versions comes down to perspective. The original, led by male vocalist Matty Healy, has a more lighthearted, upbeat approach, whereas Out In Front takes charge with a female vocalist and gives the song a fiercer, more emotional edge, making it a lot more intimate.
Another thing Out In Front does differently is that they lean into a more rock-band aesthetic. The drums keep a consistent energy throughout the track, and the guitars make you want to pick up an air guitar and play along. That energy continues when the chorus comes back around for the third time: “‘Well I know when you’re around, because I know the sound of your heart” — and the guitar breaks loose into a solo that feels like a flood of emotions breaking free, as if everything has been building to that moment.
Out In Front’s take on “The Sound” by The 1975 reimagined the pop classic by weaving in pop and rock elements, giving the song new life and making it easy for both pop and rock fans to connect with it.
Out In Front is hitting the road this June alongside PinkNoise and True North for a West Coast run. Stops include Seattle, Portland, San Jose, Sacramento, Fresno, San Diego, Mesa, Santa Ana, and Los Angeles. You can grab tickets here.
