Released on Jan. 31 as the first single on Analog Dog‘s full-length sophomore album, “Best of Me” is a feel-good groovy hit that focuses on good vibes while exploring the push and pull of attachment in relationships. Guaranteed to get listeners on the dance floor, Analog Dog focuses on creating an expressive environment for listeners through confessions of love and enticing instrumentals.
Comprised of five members, Analog Dog creates genre-bending tracks, and “Best of Me” is no exception. The group’s single draws inspiration from 70s Motown, 60s psychedelic rock and the struggles of the modern “situationship.”
Lead singer Austin Waz wrote “Best of Me” during an extremely tough, transitional period of life. He used the song as an outlet for his deepest emotions and desires, while preparing himself to move forward in life:
“I used this song as an opportunity to make my unconscious conscious, and I wrote all of the melodies and lyrics for the song sitting at that piano right before I moved out and ended an entire chapter of my life.”
Analog Dog creates a powerful contrast between the upbeat instrumentals of “Best of Me” and the desperation found in the lyrics of this song: “I want your love / Need your touch / So damn much / You’ve got the best of me.” The chorus perfectly encapsulates the desires of Waz, all the while keeping the rhythm going.
Waz’s vocals featured on “Best of Me” perfectly pair with the rest of the composition of the single. His voice is smooth, tone matching the theme of the song, yet carrying pain from being in a tough relationship.
