Jordan Tariff takes us along a familiar path in “Hard to Be Human”

Date:

As a kid, you may have a strong sense of who you want to become and where you see yourself. Once you arrive in your 20s, however, there’s a looming feeling of uncertainty about how fast life passes you by and the pressures of having it all figured out can feel heavy.

In Jordan Tariff‘s vulnerable new song “Hard to Be Human,” we get a sense of reassurance that we are not alone in doing “our best.”

“Hard to Be Human” starts off exploring the concept of growing up naive and optimistic, hoping that over time maturity will solve the anxiety. In the first verse, it feels as though we are navigating anxiety from Tariff’s point of view with lines like “I don’t know what I’m doing / I try my best and then I try again / But I’m lost / I’m confused and / Is it all an illusion?”.

As the song progresses, Tariff introduces the character of his father, asking if he had this same level of apprehensiveness towards life when he was young. The lyrics reflect, “Did he turn 25 then overnight figure out his life / Well if he’s only skin around some bones / And a heart looking for some place to call home / How did his head find meaning?”.

In the last verse, Tariff gives a birds-eye view of the collective human experience by singing to the audience directly. With a hopeful and upbeat tune, he sings, “We don’t know what we’re doing / We try our best and then we try again.” He succeeds in letting us know we are all in the same boat and there is no instruction manual for life.

“Hard to Be Human” is one out of three songs on Jordan Tariff’s EP, which you can listen to here.
