Matt Storm releases “words don’t describe” ahead of upcoming album

Date:

Canada’sĀ Matt Storm has continued his steady stream of single releases prior to his forthcoming album, SYSTEM BREAKS, with the delicate “words don’t describe.”

Experimenting with the limits of jazz and neo-soul has become an obsession for Storm, and “words don’t describe” is a product of such obsession. In the song’s intro, a slightly harsh guitar, drum kit and bass give a sense of comfort before a free-flowing synth melody enters to disrupt it. The wobbling synth hard-panned to the left gives a stark contrast to the rest of the instrumentation and adds an almost hallucinative quality to the song. An overall focus on tonality over structure is clear from the first verse, with Storm’s slightly raspy and off-kilter vocal delivery acting as a bridge between the synth and guitars.

As the song progresses, Storm’s psych-rock influences become stronger with the addition of distorted lead guitars and keys coming in and out without any preamble, reminiscent of early DjoĀ andĀ Tame Impala. Yet, there is no clear build or change in “words don’t describe,” with the mellow mood and pace staying strong for the entire duration. In the end, Storm falls back on his jazz roots with the soft sendoff with the drums.

“words don’t describe” by Matt Storm is a soft but clear take on both psych-rock and early jazz. Storm chooses the right elements of both genres to create a concise but hypnotic song.

“words don’t describe” is set to be featured on Matt Storm’s upcoming album SYSTEM BREAKS,Ā out May 29.
