almost monday serves up summer heat with “she likes sports”

Date:

Imagine the girl you like using your heart as a tennis ball and all you can do is try not getting hit in the face when she serves. The California-based indie-pop band almost monday, throws you into the cool and salty surf with their new single “she likes sports.”

Like a jingle you’d hear during summer savings season with a pace comparable to the early days of The Strokes and melodies like The Kooks, the whole listening experience is comparable to those summer days that we never want to end. Sprinkling in a bit of that garage rock feel, the trio from San Diego is serving up laid back vibes and funk on a silver platter, probably behind a surf shop.

Through the song, as his fantasy makes him sweat as if he were physically competing for his crush’s heart, the sun filled energy of singer Dawson Daugherty pulls you in with the enthralling challenge of a love interest who just won’t let you win. The song is an amusing comparison to someone playing hard to get, looking at love as a competition, like one would with sports. Describing his obsession with his crush and the aura around the tense longing for her, with almost a whine in his voice when Daugherty sings “Crowd’s loud / Setting the scene / Looks like the cover of a magazine.

Along with Cole Clisby on guitar and Luke Fabry on bass, “she likes sports” blasts listeners through the haze and breathless marathon of relentlessly chasing your crush down by seamlessly combining retro surf-rock elements with contemporary indie-pop production. almost monday crafts a distinctively vibrant sound that remains cohesive throughout DIVE, their highly anticipated debut album.

The beachy tones and lighthearted lyrics are predictable yet tons of fun. This upbeat and sufficiently produced song, specifically the guitar riff, reminds me of “Lonely Boy” by The Black Keys. With its retro, raspy, and slightly distorted vocals and background shouts, it fills the space to make the tune more full sounding.

“she likes sports” is flirty and thrilling as the story of the classic chase is underway.
