Atta Boy’s ‘Silt’ is an ethereal meditation on nature and (be)longing

Date:

Los Angeles band Atta Boy have released “Silt”, the title track from their newly released third album of the same name. The single arrives alongside a simple but moving video and marks the beginning of a run of North American tour dates this summer.

Since forming as childhood friends, Atta Boy have quietly carved out their own corner of indie music. Their dreamy blend of indie folk, dream pop and indie rock has earned a devoted international following and appearance on sound tracks. Dashel Thompson (piano), Eden Brolin (vocals), Freddy Reish (guitar), and Lewis Pullman (drums) come together again for this new era of their music.

“Silt” unfolds with deep, droning textures and a steady acoustic pulse that anchors the ephemeral tones. From the shrouding of this sound Atta Boy’s lyricism can freely scale the flows of nature. The result feels intimate while gloriously vast. The sea, sky and supernova are harmonic when laid out in this song.

The soaring chorus provides “Silt”’s emotional centre. Eden Brolin’s voice seems to traverse the space between the earth and the sky, lifting her desires into something almost celestial. Ascending melodies of “I want to kiss the sea / I want to be the earth that buries me.” give each wish a quiet urgency that comes with realisation. The track’s hopes are grounded with depths of ethereal drone-like electric guitar.

Fans of Adrienne Lenker or Big Thief will find familiar beauty in Atta Boy’s delicate songwriting. That resemblance feels fitting as Brolin explained that she wrote “Silt” during a School of Song workshop led by Lenker.  The song grew from an exercise that encouraged observations inspired by a photograph by Genesis Baez. She shared “I think if I break down the lyrics it’s a lot of ‘looking at nature as a human; looking at human as nature’. Shifting perspectives and the levity that can accompany that.’”

Atta Boy now take Silt on the road with headline dates across North America, kicking off July 9th in San Francisco. See tour dates and tickets here.
