Last week, Seattle natives Death Cab for Cutie brought their newest album to New York’s Forest Hills Stadium.
Real Estate opened up the night, playing their unique blend of indie rock to the excited audience. They played songs off all four of their albums, including their latest album, The Main Thing, released in 2020.
Death Cab for Cutie graced the stage to a mix of strobing lights and subdued yet excited fans. They kicked off their set with “I Don’t Know How I Survive” from their newest album, Asphalt Meadows, released earlier this September. They played energetically through a set that included songs from almost all ten of their albums, dating back to 2000’s We Have The Facts and We’re Voting Yes. During “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”, a crowd and personal favorite from 2005’s Plans, the rest of the band left frontman Ben Gibbard to perform the song on his own, while telling a story of the band’s first time playing in NYC at the Mercury Lounge back in 1999 where the venue was mostly empty except for a few unsatisfied patrons. It was inspiring to hear that story compared to the crowd they drew at a nearly 14,000 capacity venue just 20 years later. Death Cab finished off their show with “Bixby Canyon Bridge” and thanked the audience for sticking with them over the past 25 years and promising to come back soon.
