Bre Kennedy owns her sadness on “Baby Blue”

Date:

On her 2023 album, Scream Over Everything, Bre Kennedy took listeners on a journey of self-discovery. She shared personal stories that touched on her family and relationships, which helped her tap into aspects of herself that she had kept hidden. She continued to tell her story on stripped back versions of the album’s songs last year, which not only showcased her musical creativity but also her skills as a storyteller, songwriter, and producer. Her talents have brought her up on stage with artists like Neil Young, John Mayer, and Willie Nelson, and have led to much acclaim from tastemakers like Consequence of Sound. As Bre begins her next chapter, she does so in an elegant, confident way with “Baby Blue.”

On “Baby Blue,” Bre owns the side of herself that feels deeply. The vibe of the track is moody yet calm, as we hear light guitar strums and relaxed vocals. All the while, Bre does not try to suppress feelings of sadness, giving us an anthem that celebrates the pain instead of pushing it away. She sings, “I know that it can’t last forever / But it’s taking me over tonight” and “If I’m gonna be blue / Then I’m gonna be blue, baby blue,” and lets us indulge in how freeing it can feel when you just allow yourself to feel.

Telling us more about “Baby Blue,” Bre explains,

“In a world that tells us to stay composed, sweet, and easy to swallow, I wrote this song about being honest and owning how I feel. It’s about the radical act of allowing ourselves to feel sadness and anger, especially in a world that constantly seems to break our hearts. As a woman who’s been told ‘sadness isn’t attractive,’ this is my response: ‘If I’m going to be blue, then I’m gonna be blue, baby blue.’”
