Anna Shoemaker releases “Sick!” from upcoming album

Date:

It all started with a bedroom floor and a viral mashup for indie pop artist Anna Shoemaker.  Six years ago, Anna decided to release a mix of Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” with Chance the Rapper’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses,” which took her to new heights.  The track pulled in a new wave of fans, who would go on to support Anna in future releases, including two EPs and numerous singles that showcased her bedroom pop style.  Anna has definitely come a long way, and as she gets ready to release her debut album next year, she is giving us the project’s first single, “Sick!”

While “Sick!” was made in Anna’s apartment, it drifts out of that familiar bedroom pop world that we have heard in Anna’s repertoire.  It still contains sprinkles of synth and guitar work, but has a more “grown-up” and introspective feel.  We hear Anna piece together the aftereffects of a breakup, singing, “I’ve been feeling sentimental, crying in the bathroom / I could get my shit together, but I just don’t want to,” and asking, “Is it sick I like missing you?”  About the track, Anna shared,

“’Sick!’ is about missing that adrenaline rush a toxic relationship brings you and how it can be mistaken for missing the person.”

Even though she was “missing” this person, Anna had other people in her life to help her channel what she was thinking into a song.  Additional instrumentation for the track was given by indie artist Middle Part, while co-production credit has been given to pop artist Khaya Cohen.  You can check out the final project below.

You can listen to “Sick!” on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.

You can also catch Anna headlining The Sultan Room in New York on September 30.  Tickets can be purchased here.
