When delivered in its most extreme form, popular music is meant to be provocative. Whether it’s through alternative lyrics or unconventional imagery, pop music is most thrilling when conveyed with a certain visual or auditory sting. When stepping into the world of Los Angeles alt-pop artist DeathbyRomy, listeners will find an artistic attack that is just as sharp, as she utilizes subcultural aesthetics and powerful songwriting to maintain not just a musical repertoire, but a cinematic world.
DeathbyRomy began making music at the age of 15, releasing her debut single “Tiempo” in 2017. Her debut album Monsters arrived the following year, which soon led to her signing with Capitol Records in 2019. She released her hit single “Problems,” which arrived ahead of her Love U – to Death EP, and went viral on TikTok. In the years that followed, DeathbyRomy released two more EPs — Songs For My Funeral (2021) and Entropy (2022) — through Capitol Records. Last year, she released her debut full-length release, Hollywood Forever, independently.
Exploring the dark underbelly of working as a female artist in the City of Angels, Hollywood Forever stands as DeathbyRomy’s definitive release, using elements of trap, heavy metal, industrial, and pop to explore feminism, mental health, and the personal growth obtained throughout her musical journey. DeathbyRomy’s artistry explores the ugliness of beauty and the beauty of ugliness, with the embodiment of the dark feminine serving as her constant throughline.
Following the release of Hollywood Forever, DeathbyRomy embarked on her very first headlining tour across the U.S. She has continued to release new singles into this year, including her most recent release “BODY HORROR.” Exploring the disturbing ways in which young women are sexualized and taken advantage of in their youth, DeathbyRomy uses her signature blend of striking visuals and vulnerable songwriting to write a track that is ultimately an anthem of empowerment and ownership to both herself and women everywhere.
Through this summer and the remainder of the year, the “BDSM” singer will tour across the globe, playing across Europe and the U.K. this June and July. Playing a number of festivals this summer, she’ll also be playing select shows supporting Limp Bizkit. She’s also set to make appearances at four Vans Warped Tour dates this year, including Washington D.C., Long Beach, Mexico City, and Orlando.
