London artist Nilüfer Yanya burst onto our radar in a big way with 2018’s Miss Universe, with most critics proclaiming her to be one of the next great artists carrying the torch for the UK music scene. Miss Universe’s follow-up, PAINLESS, is due out March 4th via ATO Records and it looks as if Nilüfer is amplifying her scope and vision in a significant way based on lead single “stabilise” and today’s release “midnight sun”.
“midnight sun” is utterly entrancing. The song begins with a hypnotic, plucked guitar line that’s reminiscent of “Paranoid Android” and a shuffling, downtempo drumbeat before it builds into a grungy chorus stacked with euphoria. Combined with Nilüfer’s feathery vocals that float above the noise, it’s a compelling single from a sure-to-be great album.
